On the Record
You’ve heard it before — but it’s important to note, it’s all on the record.
That’s right, “off-the-record” doesn’t really exist.
When you’re participating in a media interview, whether for print, podcast, broadcast – whatever, assume that every camera is live and every microphone is hot.
Yes, even if you think the interview is over or it hasn’t started yet, everything that you say is “fair game.”
And although it might be tempting to say, “now this is off the record”, just don’t. The journalist is under no obligation to honor that.
So keep it professional and always speak as though you’re on air.
