What to Wear on Television

So, you’re going to be interviewed. On television!

The first thing you’re going to think about is how you look.

There’re a few tips to help you feel your best under the bright lights.

First of all, the rules have changed. And thankfully, you don’t have to fit just one mold.

Plan to wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable, as long as it reflects the organization you represent and doesn’t distract from your message.

That means – go show off your authentic self! People want to see who you are.

With a few exceptions:

  • Avoid large or noisy jewelry, such as bangle bracelets, or overly sparkly jewelry that will reflect the camera lights.

  • Keep your hair away from your face – if your hair covers your eyes, it will be harder for the audience to connect with you.

  • Certain colors look best on camera, namely, pastels and blues. All-black, all-red, and all-white - not so much. This is mostly a lighting thing, and we all know the importance of good lighting.

  • Be sure to keep your style simple. No checks, stripes, or tight patterns.

  • And finally — Keep your makeup matte. That means, avoid any shimmer that will be amplified on camera.

Now get out there! You got this.
